"Less is more" and the art of modeling complex phenomena: Simplification may but need not be the key to handle large networks

چکیده
In the October 21, 2005 issue of the magazine ‘Science’ a perspectives article by Stefan Bornholdt addresses the problem of the proper level of details in the description of complex systems [1]. ‘Less is more’ is used in this article to encourage the usage of highly simplified dynamical elements for modeling large and complex nonlinear systems. The special case considered is modeling of large genetic networks, but the problem is much more general, arises often in science and beyond and, perhaps, deserves broader attention. Some older examples of ‘less is more’ that have reached already a certain degree of maturity and common acceptance may be useful with respect to the recent revival of this paradigm. I shall present here two different problems from the interface of physics and chemistry, which were heavily debated in the past and for which consensus has been achieved by now, before returning to the burning biological questions.

Knowledge and Networks – Key Sources of Power in Global Health; Comment on “Knowledge, Moral Claims and the Exercise of Power in Global Health”
Shiffman rightly raises questions about who exercises power in global health, suggesting power is a complex concept, and the way it is exercised is often opaque. Power that is not based on financial strength but on knowledge or experience, is difficult to estimate, and yet it may provide the legitimacy to make moral claims on what is, or ought to be, on global health agendas. Twenty years ago p...
متن کاملKinetic Mechanism Reduction Using Genetic Algorithms, Case Study on H2/O2 Reaction
For large and complex reacting systems, computational efficiency becomes a critical issue in process simulation, optimization and model-based control. Mechanism simplification is often a necessity to improve computational speed. We present a novel approach to simplification of reaction networks that formulates the model reduction problem as an optimization problem and solves it using geneti...
متن کاملLink Prediction using Network Embedding based on Global Similarity
Background: The link prediction issue is one of the most widely used problems in complex network analysis. Link prediction requires knowing the background of previous link connections and combining them with available information. The link prediction local approaches with node structure objectives are fast in case of speed but are not accurate enough. On the other hand, the global link predicti...
متن کاملA Study of the Concept and Applicability of Modeling with an Emphasis on the verses against Tabarruj, Bedizenment
The art-industry of "modeling" is originally of the West. The present study seeks to describe a Qur'anic and traditional approach on the art-industry modeling. As explained in the paper, be taken as a model for men and children may often be taken as acceptable, but the rule of modeling may not be taken for women; since they cannot advertise goods without revealing feminine, intrinsic, behaviora...
متن کاملOnm-7: Safe Pregnancy after ART
Background: The transition to parenthood is a period of intra- and interpersonal changes and may bring up unexpected problems. The first child's birth has a significant effect on marital relations because the relations change from dyadic to triadic. In general, marital relationships seem to be especially vulnerable during the transition to parenthood, and several studies have revealed a de...
